About Us

Founded in January 2024, MITOGUARDER is a research-driven innovation project that is creating a new, genetically engineered tool to enhance recombinant protein production. Our ongoing R&D and commercialisation activities are geared towards launching as a spin-out company in 2026, where we will bring the benefits of our MITOGUARDER technology to market.

We are led and advised by a team of outstanding scientists and entrepreneurs, with academic partners around the globe testing how our technology can benefit their scientific research. We have also set the stage for MITOGUARDER technology to easily integrate into existing industrial infrastructures and provide future innovation across the pharmaceutical and diagnostic sectors.

In our pre-spin-out stage, we are based at the University of Helsinki (Finland). To date, we have raised funds for MITOGUARDER from a Finnish government agency (Business Finland), a private non-profit foundation (The Finnish Cultural Foundation – Ester and Uuno Koki Fund) and public funding from the University of Helsinki.

Our Team

In 2023, two scientists at the University of Helsinki (Finland) joined forces and set out to evolutionise and solve the current bottlenecks in recombinant protein production. By combining their two different areas of scientific expertise, Dr Brendan J. Battersby and Dr Sarah O'Keefe developed the MITOGUARDER innovation project.
